Tutorial : Gaiters!
November 7th, 2009
Here’s a how to on creating gaiters that fits and looks to scale
…. and of cos this is to answer Kevin’s request - here ya go mate!

The picture above is from Unterscharführer figure
Here are types of gaiters available in the market. I’ve got DML’s and DID’s. They are very well created, especially DID’s with the profile of the gaiters capture nicely. I do not have new lines though. Anyways – all of them have one thing that kinda turn me off to use em…. they are simply too thick. The manufacturers created the gaiters from 2 layers of fabric stiched together….. looks good flat, but if wraped around the boots – it just look wrong
So i create my own – see below …. It kinda basic – strips of fabric and with a help of MOMMY with her sewing machine – the pattern of the threading are created. Next i airbrushed the fabric with tamiya khaki.
A comparison with DML (top), DID and castlebrimstone’s! My gaiter is created with a bit of slack.
A picture to compare the thickness.
Next the gaiters are stiched end to end – as below. The point of stiching are where the straps are gonna be. The gaiters need to be fitted tightly around the ankle boots and then the points are marked and later stiched. If you remember i created some slack – here is where extra slack is cut off.
The tighter the better. Next when i am happy with it – i hairspray it to fix the paint and also to have the gaiters a stiffened.
The next step (which i dont have a picture of) is to create the straps …. then you’re done!
Comparing DML with mine .
How to fit the darn thing?
First have your fig wear some pants ….
Wear the gaiter in first, then the ankle boot…
Next, maneuver the gaiter to fit nicely on top of the boot (like below)
Next neatly fit the pants into the gaiters …. job done. Here’s a comparison with DML and mine.
Well – hope this helps.

Wow man! Thanks! You didn’t have to go through all that trouble just for me. I found some material to use (BGT green grenade bags) but now I have to find someone who is proficient with a sewing machine. I’ll let ya know how it turn out. Cheers bud,
-Kevin
